Before Therapy

When I first reached out for help, I didn’t really know what I was looking for. On paper, life was good. I was in a solid relationship with a woman I loved deeply, had a steady job, and my children were doing well. But underneath, I was exhausted from my own thoughts. My mind never stopped. I could take the smallest thing, such as an unanswered message, a quiet evening or a look that felt different, and turn it into a full story in my head.
I had been cheated on in a past relationship, and even though I told myself I had moved on, it was clear I hadn’t. The fear was still there, waiting to wake up. I didn’t trust easily anymore, and even when my partner, Sarah, gave me no reason to doubt her, I would still find one. My imagination could outpace any reassurance she gave me.
The problem wasn’t her. I knew that. The problem was the storm inside my own head.
I had tried counselling through work before, but it felt too surface-level. What I wanted was to understand why my brain did what it did, the science of it, and to find real tools to stop it running wild.

Understanding What Was Happening

In my first session with Steve, he didn’t tell me to “just stop overthinking.” Instead, he explained why my mind reacted the way it did. He talked about how the brain filters information, how the amygdala acts as the emotional security guard and how it can hijack logic in seconds. He explained that the brain cannot always tell the difference between imagination, memory and reality.
For the first time, I understood there was a reason behind the chaos. I wasn’t broken; my brain was doing its job too well, trying to protect me from something that wasn’t actually happening.
Steve said something that stayed with me:
“Your brain can’t tell the difference between being in danger and imagining danger. It reacts to both in the same way.”
That explained the tight stomach, the racing thoughts and the sudden shift from calm to panic. It was like having an alarm system that went off even when there was no fire.
We explored how past experiences had trained that alarm system. I had been pattern-matching current situations with the betrayal from years ago. Each time I noticed something that felt similar, my body reacted first and asked questions later.
That understanding alone was powerful. It took away some of the shame. I wasn’t paranoid; I was reacting to old wiring that needed retraining.
